Slowing Nearsightedness: The Science of Ortho-K and Myopia Control for Ashland Kids

When a child is diagnosed with myopia, or nearsightedness, updating their glasses prescription can help them see clearly - but it does not necessarily slow the underlying progression of myopia. As the eye continues to grow longer, the prescription can become stronger over time.

For families in Ashland, myopia management provides options designed to help slow this progression during childhood. At our office, we offer several approaches, including Ortho-K, MiSight 1 day contact lenses, low-dose atropine eye drops, and Stellest spectacle lenses - the newest myopia management option we offer.

Why Slowing Myopia Is Important

Myopia typically develops when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing incoming light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This makes distant objects appear blurry.

Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased lifetime risk of certain eye conditions, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration. Myopia management focuses on slowing progression and limiting excessive eye growth while a child's eyes are still developing.

Parents may notice signs such as:

•          Squinting to see distant objects

•          Sitting closer to the television or classroom board

•          Frequent changes in a glasses prescription

•          Complaints that distant objects look blurry

•          Holding devices or books unusually close

How Ortho-K Helps Control Myopia

Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, uses specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight. While your child sleeps, the lenses temporarily and gently reshape the front surface of the cornea. The lenses are removed in the morning, allowing many patients to see clearly during the day without glasses or daytime contacts.

For myopia management, Ortho-K does more than temporarily correct blurry vision. Its optical design changes how light focuses across the retina, creating signals that can help reduce the stimulus for excessive eye growth. Consistent overnight wear and regular follow-up visits are important for maintaining vision correction and monitoring myopia progression.

Stellest Spectacle Lenses for Myopia Management

Stellest spectacle lenses are the newest approach to myopia management we offer at our office. Unlike contact lens options, Stellest lenses are eyeglass lenses designed specifically for children with myopia.

These spectacle lenses are designed to slow myopia progression while also correcting refractive error so children can see clearly throughout the day. For families looking for a glasses-based approach to myopia management, Stellest lenses may provide a convenient option without the need for contact lens wear.

Other Myopia Management Options We Offer

In addition to Ortho-K and Stellest spectacle lenses, we offer MiSight 1 day contact lenses and low-dose atropine eye drops. MiSight 1 day is a soft, daily disposable contact lens specifically designed for myopia control in children. Its specialized optics correct distance vision while creating a treatment effect intended to slow myopia progression. Because each pair is discarded after use, there is no nightly lens cleaning or storage.

Low-dose atropine eye drops may also be prescribed to help slow childhood myopia progression. Unlike Ortho-K, MiSight, and Stellest lenses, atropine does not provide vision correction, so children may still need glasses or contact lenses.

Choosing the Right Myopia Management Plan

There is no single myopia management method that is right for every child. We consider your child's age, prescription, rate of progression, eye health, lifestyle, and comfort with glasses or contact lenses when recommending treatment. Regular eye examinations also allow us to monitor changes over time and adjust the treatment plan when needed.

If your child's nearsightedness is progressing, schedule a myopia management evaluation with Family Vision Care of Richmond to learn whether Ortho-K, MiSight 1 day, low-dose atropine, Stellest spectacle lenses, or another personalized approach may be appropriate.
